The women honored come from a diverse ethnic, racial and geographic background. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a Civil War surgeon and an advocate for women's rights and dress reform. Walker tirelessly pursued her desire to serve as a surgeon during the Civil War, and in 1863 she became the first female surgeon of the U.S. Army as a "contract assistant surgeon (civilian)." To date, Walker is the only woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor. The reverse of the coin features Dr. Mary Edwards Walker holding a pocket surgical kit, with the Medal of Honor on her uniform and a surgeon's badge on her collar. After receiving the award, she continued to wear the Medal of Honor for the rest of her life. The left side of the design shows the details of the Medal of Honor. Inscriptions: “United States of America”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “25 CENTS”, “DR. MARY EDWARDS WALKER" and "MEDAL OF HONOR 1865". The overall obverse (head) features a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and created by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate for the 1932 quarter commemorating the Bicentennial of George Washington's birth. Inscriptions: “FREEDOM”, “WE TRUST IN GOD” and “2024”.
